When to outsource
Elance, Get Friday and the host of other internet based outsourcing websites today make it easier than ever to outsource parts of your daily work. Outsourcing- you might think - is the concern of owner-managers or plain old managers. Not so. A recent presentation by Joe Vitael proffered a simple equation for when to outsource. Take whatever it is you earn as a salary - say 50k per year. Half it and divide by a thousand. That gives you what your hourly wage is. If you have something on your todo list which you can outsource for half of that money - do it - get it off your plate.
I agree, outsourcing is a great way for start ups to get multiple expertise at a fraction of the cost of hiring.

It’s not that simple as you describe it really.
The first question is:
1. Do you (or your company) know how to do the task that is required to be done?
I have seen it on the search engine optimisation tasks that I specialise in. The companies have a dilemma, should we do SEO ourselves or to outsource it? Majority of them do not even ask themselves if they have a resource who even knows the basics of the SEO. Even if they realise that there is a lack of knowledge internally and a training will be required, they do not take the cost and the time for the training into the account when calculating if to outsource of the do it in house.
My advice is for the 99% of the SME’s is to outsource the tasks like the SEO to the professionals. A 5 to 10 heads company does not really need a HR Manager, an Accountant, a Marketing Manager, and so on. Same goes for the SEO. All of those tasks should be outsourced, since in the end it will be done more efficiently if managed properly and will cost less.
